Since 2005 I have developed a practice of working with sound recordings as a raw material for composition. These are often environmental sounds he has captured employing a variety of methods and techniques, in order to obtain discrete or obscured sonic phenomena.
In removing sound from it's source, and often amplifying it significantly, it becomes much more abstract - familiar, yet otherworldly. More recently, when presenting work in a performance or installation, for me the space and the objects within become instruments to be played.
Simon has a large number of works published through many specialist organisations, including Touch Music, Cronica, Dragon's Eye, Monochrome Vision and Entr'acte; has performed extensively internationally; collaborated with artists from musicians to performance artists, painters to video artists, dancers to poets; has run listening and field recording workshops in UK, Estonia, Colombia, Chile and Australia; and received a large number of commissions and awards for projects and installations - notably for his own project 'Active Crossover'.
Supported Arts Council England and PRS for Music Foundation, the project comprises sound installation, performance, collaboration and workshops. 'Active Crossover' has toured six cities in the UK, and also been hosted in Estonia, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Norway and Australia, with future residencies in Germany and Japan.
A further development of Simon's practice is the participation in the arts education project RED de Artes Visuales de Medellin in Colombia, where he ran workshop sessions for 7 different groups of schoolchildren aged between 8 and 18 years old, each week for 9 weeks, exploring listening exercises; recording techniques; microphone construction; interventions; and instrument and kinetic sculpture building.

2014
February-March: Residency at Villa Waldberta, Feldafing, Germany - During the residency I collaborated with Horst Konietzny, Lewis Kaye, Norman Ypsmael and Christine Schorkhuber, amongst others to create new work and research new presentation and recording methods.
I also gave workshops in recording and composition of soundscapes to students of the Isus School for refugees.
2013
October-December: 'Active Crossover: Kristiansand' - a residency project with Agder Kunstsenter, Kristiansand, Norway. During this time I developed a new work, activating motors with sound impulses from field recordings captured in the local area. This led to a collaboration with Venezuelan artist Naysa Andrade Tønnesland. I also collaborated with local musicians Hilde Marie Holsen, Jon S. Lunde and Terje Paulsen, finally presenting a concert in the Kristiansand Kunsthall as part of an exhibition opening by Erik Pirolt.
An important part of the residency was giving presentations to 300 local schoolchildren in one week as part of the 'Cultural Rucksack' arts education project and I ran a workshop in active listening, field recording techniques and the construction of contact microphones and hydrophones.

July-September: 'El Mundo de los Sonidos Ocultos' for Red Artes Visuales de Medellin, Colombia
English translation: 'The World of Hidden Sounds'. For 3 months I gave workshop sessions once a week in 7 different locations for schoolchildren as part of an arts education project run by Alcaldia of Medell?n and Casa Tres Patios. The result was a huge concert with the children playing 'acoustic laptops', instruments constructed from everyday objects.

January-April: 'MUUA Lab/C3P incorporating Active Crossover'. Simon was in residency at Casa Tres Patios, Medellin, Colombia, working in collaboration with the Museo Universitario de la Universidad de Antioquia. The project is intended to give an artist a working space to develop new ideas in a gallery space that is open to be visited by members of the public, creating new discourse and interest in the arts.

2012
November-January: 'Tsonami Festival' & 'Active Crossover: Valparaiso'. Simon was invited to perform site-specific work, give workshops and compose a radio piece for the Tsonami Festival 2012 and was also artist-in-residence with Pia Michelle, running the Active Crossover project to explore the sonic characteristics of the local area and buildings, and collaborating with local artists.

August: 'Time Release'. As part of the exhibition 'Carpe Diem' in the municipal art museum and gallery of Toyota City, Japan, I collaborated with Lethe (Kiyoharu Kuwayama) to produce a site specific audio/visual piece which was presented in the museum's auditorium space.

May: 'Active Crossover: Castlemaine'. Participating in the Seedpod Residency at Punctum, Castlemaine, Australia, Simon worked with local artists Eamon Sprod (Tarab), Lizzie Pogson and Jacques Soddell, exploring sound phenomena at the ICU, Castlemaine and the surrounding area, culminating in an installation and live performance event.
2011
February-October: 'Active Crossover 2011' was hosted in six gallery spaces in the UK throughout 2011. Exhibitions and performances were held in South Hill Park, Bracknell; Wolstenholme Creative Space, Liverpool; Millspace, Armley, Leeds; and Soundfjord, London and further performance events were hosted by Phoenix Brighton and Arnolfini in Bristol.
The project was supported by the galleries and Arts Council England, PRS for Music Foundation and 'I Love West Leeds' Festival 2011.

May: Field Recording Workshop. For two weeks in May 2011, Simon ran field recording and composition workshops at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota, Colombia, at the invitation of the Maestr?a Artes Pl?sticas y Visuales as part of the Masters Program.

2009-2010
May 2009-February 2010: 'Active Crossover'. Throughout May 2009 Simon was Artist-in-Residence at the Art Container, Polymer Culturehouse, Tallinn, Estonia, where he created new work, collaborated with artists and musicians based in Estonia and Latvia and ran Active Listening and Field Recording workshops for the first time.
The results of the residency were exhibited in the Dark Studio, Arnolfini, Bristol in October 2009 as part of a season devoted to sound art and field recording.
Simon curated a second showing of the sound exhibition at the Grey Area Gallery, Brighton throughout February 2010.
The exhibition and performances in UK were supported by Arts Council England.
