 Present
We can diagnose the present, look back on the past, or predict the future. At the same time, we also create the present through the past and perceive the present through the future. By repeating these processes, we can form an objective view of life. As clearly represented by the word ‘preview,’ The 2015 Preview is an exhibition where seven members comprising the second group of TEMI’s resident artists, including KIM Juree, the Bite Back Movement (LEE Seungyoun and Alexander Augustus), LEE Sunhee, PARK Soyoung, CHO Youngjoo, Tiziana Jill Beck and HONG Kiwonshare their views of and attitudes toward the world. They use various different media, such as installation, drawing and video, but their common concern is ‘the present,' or a better present proposed based on the paradoxical social phenomena of the ‘present’ and personal experiences.

The Bite Back Movement lets us look back on what we always encounter in daily life but has passed by until now through a bizarre-shaped future created based on the artists’ imagination. On the other hand, KIM Juree, LEE Sunhee and Beck show the present by weaving in parts of the past. By sharing with us the process of a house built in a perfect shape breaking down because of water, KIM lets us think about the rotating circle of life in which new things are created, destroyed and then started again. LEE’s knitwork conveys the artist’s wish to create a better future through the gestures of unraveling knitwear that holds the time of the past and re-knitting them. Beck wittily presents the ironic situations that frequently take place in the Korean society, which she witnessed during her 10-month stay here, through trophies that signify success and male and female couples.

If PARK Soyoung reveals the weak, marginalized people in our society using worthless materials such as fallen leaves and waste, CHO Youngjoo offers an exaggerated representation of her experiences of discrimination as a woman, rather than an artist, both in Korea and abroad. In a project that targets different generations from children to middle-aged women, she shows the social gender roles and awareness imposed on women, who are still considered the weaker gender. Meanwhile, HONG Kiwon breaks the subtle tension and the unavoidable subordinate-superior relationship between the viewers and the objects through his works whose meanings cannot be properly delivered without the participation of the viewers.

Why do the artists then deal with such themes or issues now? That may be because these are the realities that face us every day. The present and experiences that the artists try to share represent their will to make a better present through persistent interest in our society and visual messages that is, for the present, on which each of us are firmly standing with two feet.

KIM Juree (1980~) ponders on modern life focused on materials using the mediums of ‘earth’ and ‘water,’ which are two of the most basic materials that signify the beginning of life and formation of things. Water being poured on a house built in a perfect shape with earth plays the dual role of destruction and revivification, which in turn finishes the process of annihilation. Earth and water are two different forms of matter when they are separated, but when they come in contact with each other, they become one by disintegrating and completing self-denial. By speeding up time and showing the process of the destruction of the house, the artist tells a story about the circumstances of the present age and the frailty of materials.Houses presented in the housing series of Hwigyeong are those mass-produced in the 1970s and 1980s. The artist delivers the story of these houses that still play their role as old-style housing in various parts of the city, although they are gradually declining in number and will eventually vanish from sight. In Landscape-scene, fragments and remnants of a city in ruins have been turned into earth and are being eroded by water being poured on them. The processes of building architecture — the product of the time in which the contemporary spirit, culture, materials and circumstances are mingled — with earth and dissolving it with water represent the natural algorithm of creation and destruction, and are founded in the interest in life and contemplation on a self-reflective existence.

The Bite Back Movement(이승연(1982~), 알렉산더 어거스투스 Alexander Augustus(1988~))는 “사회적 억압에 순응하지 않겠다”라는 작가적 선언 아래 ‘종교’, ‘청년실업’, ‘이주 노동자’ 등과 같은 사회적 이슈를 미래를 통해 현재를 성찰하는 작업을 하고 있다.

The Bite Back Movement (LEE Seungyoun (1982~) and Alexander Augustus (1988~)) has been working on social issues such as religion, youth unemployment and migrant workers as well as the contemplation of the present through the future, after declaring that it would not conform to social suppression.
In this exhibition, the team presents an advanced version of the The Church of Red Cross. series, which belong to the OH MAY GOD collection. Feeling as if the red neon signs, which can be seen anywhere in the Republic of Korea, represent tombs or future cities, the artists worked to show the future of religious people who live in a unified ‘Neo Korea’ in the year 2100. Although based on a study, they present an art object that plays the role of a tool of faith for not only the religious but also for ordinary people using their extraordinary imagination and interesting passages from the Bible. It comprises various installation works including the costumes of future Christians, moving church statues, a performance video that visualizes future church services, and a silk screen series on the voyage of gods from the past up to the year 2100.

Park Soyoung (1979~) attempts to change the meanings of things that are marginalized and otherized in the social and cultural context through the language of art. In particular, she reifies things that belong to nature, examines the possibility of the changes in the human-centered view of the world, and express these in the language of art.
The World of Things Lost and Rainbow Trap are parts of the ongoing project Voyage to the Lost Futures , which examines the things that get otherized in the process of observation and collection of ecological environment. Collected items that look worthless, such as parts fallen from creatures with the passage of time and things that no longer work, are illuminated using a device that generates a materialistic imagination. This experiment is carried out through video and installation works that reveal things that have been neglected and expand narrow areas.

LEE Sunhee (1984~) focuses on finding positive things ultimately needed in life, such as solace, peace of mind, and happiness. She also explores the mechanism of communication and continuously circulating relationships through random objects. Her intention is to examine conflict and ideology hidden behind entangled relationships based on the positions of things that circulate and change endlessly. Everything that had suffered is work that seeks balance in a variety of relationships through the medium of old clothes given by her acquaintances. Knitting used for the work is an activity of entwining everything that coexists in the world, such as the self and others, inside and outside as well as reality and the ideal. Like numerous different colors found in knitwork, all disparate things become tangled up in a natural way to make up the present.

CHO Youngjoo (1978~) refers to the irrationality of Korean society perceived from the viewpoint of Korean women using various media including performance, installation, video and community art. The artist points to things like social customs, patriarchy and toadyism that still affect our daily lives and tries to approach discrimination, a theme that she has pursued for a long time, from a different angle. Art Project with Middle-aged Women is a video dance project carried out in a number of different areas in Korea with the participation of ordinary 50’~60’ women. Through Floral patterned Romance (2014) that took place in Busan based on the concept of elegance, The Divas’ go Out (2015), which played out the image of sexy femme fatales in Osan, and Grand Cuties (2015) that presented cute and lovely images of women in Daejeon, she offers us a chance to look back on the images imposed on women by Korean society and consider gender identity within reality and the society’s demand.

Drawing for Tiziana Jill Beck (1982~, Germany) is not only a medium of representation, but rather an instrument for perception, research and communication. Her work revolves around: strategy, success, cities, movement, codes, habits, gestures, conventions, fun, failure, desire, nightmares, loopholes, memory, the invisible, the odd, the incomplete, man and woman, animals, tradition, nature, the slow and the fast. In her installation the artist shows recent drawings she has worked on during her current ten months stay in Korea. Beck's large-scale formats and etching series interrogate the interhuman relations facing the constant changes of a highly competitive society.

HONG Kiwon (1978~) studies the relationship between body and space in the realm of expanded movements, through which he carries out experiments on status and temporary values. Untitled poses questions on the attempt to break from a passive attitude and the boundary between the perceiver and the perceived based on the tension between objects and viewers arising in a given space, which is measured using industrial weights capable of measuring over 4 tons.
